fig vases & the gilded age

May 27th, 2011
At willow & bloom, when looking for creative inspiration there are so many styles to draw from, such as neoclassical and modern architecture that surely satiate our pursuit.  The eponymous École des Beaux-Arts in Paris was the foundation of the Beaux Arts neoclassical architectural movement during the Gilded Age; a style that was very lavish and heavily ornamented.  Gilded edifices and facades illuminate the streets of Paris and Prague in 1860, as well as the halls of our obsession with gold.

We love what’s glittered and gold; like our gilded porcelain fig vases available for purchase at willow & bloom – $68 for the set of three stylishly presented in a kiri wood box.  Call or email for national or international shipping.

Our remodeled store

April 11th, 2011

Photography by Elke Van de Velde

As you might know, we closed for a couple of days in January to remodel our store.  We increased our floral production space by almost twice the size (yay!), but unfortunately had to reduce our retail space;  however, we still have a lovely selection of some of our most popular gifts including cards, jewelry, delicious artisan chocolates and beautiful specialty vases and containers!

We sourced these super cool vintage windows to act as a room divider between our floral production space and our retail checkout area – they have been most people’s favorite thing about our remodel.  If you’re in the Fremont area, please stop by and check us out!

A “vintage modern” wedding

January 26th, 2011

When we met with our bride Valerie, she told us during her consultation that she wanted a “vintage modern” wedding.  Given this juxtaposition in adjectives, I really had to mull that concept over in my mind to grasp how that could best be represented through florals.  Her color palette was yellow, orange, and a soft grey… which was a very striking and interesting combination (but if not used properly could have gone awry).  Fortunately through nature we were able to find the perfect stems that complemented each other to create this fabulous wedding!

We used Dusty Miller, garden roses, Crespidia, Protea, Dahlias and assorted Marigolds to create this dynamic color palette.  We wrapped the stems of her bridal bouquet with a soft grey velvet remnant piece from her wedding gown.

Valerie’s family found these awesome vintage doors and very cleverly created a backdrop to the altar which was scattered with some of the hundreds of apothecary bottles that we staged throughout the venue, 415 Westlake.  Instead of using sand at the base of the candlelit hurricane vases, we used some of the vintage buttons that Valerie’s mother collects.

The wedding was beautiful and the atmosphere was festive, and thanks to Holly-Kate at Sweet Pea Events, things went smoothly as always!  We wish Valerie and Dan the very best!

Seattle Bride Magazine Covers: Floral Bouquets

January 14th, 2011

So in between the holidays and our pending remodel, we forgot to mention that we are on two of the three Seattle Bride Magazine covers for their current Fall/Winter issue showcasing our wedding bouquet designs!

Seattle Bride asked us to create bouquets for these two different photo shoots.  The first was shot in a local warehouse and the theme was soft and feathery romance.   The color palette for the flowers was antique beige, soft pink, and a deep plum added as a complementary accent.  We used Koch and David Austin garden roses along with Mini-Calla Lilies to create this look.  The bouquet stems were finished with a wrap of vintage velvet ribbon.

The second photo shoot took place in the outdoors of the Olympic Rain Forest.  The theme was dramatic enchantment with a heavy use of local foliage to create this stunning look.  We incorporated local ferns, mossed branches, feathers, and orchids to complement the magical environment found in the Pacific Northwest.

An oh so beautiful wedding at Georgetown Studios…

October 12th, 2010

Wedding season is starting to wrap up here at willow & bloom and while we still have to wait for the professional photographs to come in,  we have some photos that we’ve taken of the weddings we’ve done that we can’t wait to share!

We had the absolute pleasure of working with Melissa and Josh in creating flowers for their beautiful wedding at Georgetown Studios. Melissa is an event planner here in town and in addition to being so sweet and lovely to work with, she also has impeccable taste!  She chose a fabulous color palette of pinks, plums, antique greens and whites accented with a vintage robin’s egg blue.  With a theme of Vintage Parisian as inspiration, we created amazing florals using our local sustainably grown flowers such as dahlias, fruited raspberry canes, kiss me over the garden gate, champagne grapes, garden roses, and antique hydrangea. The lush, and dramatic arrangements were just perfect! They brought whimsy and romance to an already fantastic space.

We created this wreath out of antique hydrangea and champagne grapes and finished it with grosgrain ribbon

There were lovely vignettes staged throughout the space and we created this centerpiece in an heirloom pewter container that Melissa brought to us.

Treehouses and Skyscrapers

August 5th, 2010

At willow and bloom, one of the things we pride ourselves on is taking the style of our couples and interpreting it into gorgeous florals that are an expression of who they are.

This past weekend we had two weddings that could not have been more different.  Lola and Dan were married at the beautiful Treehouse Point and Mara and Jason at Bell Harbor with their reception at the World Trade Center.  Both weddings were very beautiful and really captured the style of our lovely couples.

Lola and Dan wanted wedding flowers in tones of lavender, whites and greens that complemented the organic and natural look of the forest around them.  We took their vision and created designs from mini calla lilies, dusty miller, fragrant stock, lush ranunculus, fresh lavender and rosemary and accented these blooms with local fern.  For the centerpieces, we sourced the coolest pots which had a crackled glaze and moss accents…perfect for their style!

Here are some photos we took during setup at Treehouse Point.  Did you know that these treehouses are actually really beautiful on the inside and they even have a luxurious tent set-up for those wanting to sleep outdoors?  So fun!

Mara and Jason wanted a contemporary wedding in deep reds, blacks and whites.  This is one of those color palettes that can be tricky to translate into lush florals without the look appearing too harsh, but we really like how these turned out and the pop of red was actually ideal for the concrete and glass landscape of the skyscrapers and the blue waters of Elliot Bay in the background.

The bride’s bouquet was made from three different types and shades of red roses and accented with black mini calla lilies and the bridesmaids’ bouquets were in shades of all whites.  We finished the stems with luxurious ivory ribbon and they were lovely.

Mara and Jason are in Venice as we speak and they’re probably eating their fair share of pasta and the world’s best gelato!  Buona fortuna to you both!

This upcoming weekend we have three different weddings that also couldn’t be more drastically different so tune in for our next post to see the images of our “Bold Hipster”, “Sunset and Crystals”, and “Northwest Contemporary” weddings!

Bold and Beautiful Wedding Flowers

July 28th, 2010

A monochromatic color palette can create wonderful drama for wedding flowers. Joanna and Rainer got married at the The Golf Club at Newcastle and chose bold shades of reds, ranging from deep plum reds to lipstick reds. The effect was stunning. We chose deep red peonies, dark red roses, cymbidium orchids, and feathery agonis to create her romantic arrangements. The textures were amazing!
